Funded by the German Hypothekenbank AG in cooperation with the Hannover Medical School, the Johann Georg Zimmermann Prize has been awarded annually for over 40 years. The prize – amounting to 10,000 Euros – honours outstanding young investigators up to 40 years of age for their current scientific work in cancer research, and is one of the highest awards for this field in Germany. The 2020 prize went to Prof. Jan-Henning Klusmann for his work on leukemia development in children. At the presentation of the award, Prof. Klusmann gave a lecture on the topic, with a focus on Down syndrome myeloid leukemia and his 2019 Cancer Cell paper on the stepwise genetic evolution of this disease.
